Today our country has entered into the decade of education for sustainable development proclaimed by UNO for the years 2005-2014.
The libraries should analyze everything we have done to spread ecological knowledge and pay attention to the problems important for the international community. That is why ecological education is one of the priority guidelines of our central district library. Everybody understands the urgency and necessity of the problem.
The readers’ demands have changed. Young people are more interested in ecological problems, they ask for information of ecological character.
Several libraries work in accordance with the programme “Library as the Centre of Ecological Education”, they are the central district library, the Dzhida village library, the Dzhida children library, the Nizhni Torey children library, the libraries of the villages of Shartykei, Tokhoi, Khuldat and Zarubino. They are active in accumulating book stock of ecological character, making catalogues on ecology, they inform different categories of readers on ecological education.
Mostly they get books in accordance with the mega-project “Pushkin Library”, they are reference books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, books of the series “I Am Getting Acquainted with the World”, the best works on ecology and textbooks for students. One of the most important problems of book stock is subscription. All the libraries get the children’s magazine “Svirel” (Reed-pipe), the popular scientific magazine “Young Naturalist”.
The central library gets the international ecological magazine “Ecos”, the popular scientific magazines “CHIP”, “Light, Nature and Man”, “Young Naturalist”, the bulletin “ZOZH” (Healthy Lifestyle), children’s ecological magazines “Lazur” (Sky-Blue) and “Svirel”, popular scientific magazines “The World of the Baikal”, “The Windmill of Success”, as well as the local newspapers.
More and more schoolchildren and students of the Central library use the Internet, at the readers’ disposal there are electronic versions of “Illustrated Encyclopedia” in two discs “Ecology” for the 5th (6th) form. But it is not enough.
In the Central library there is the thematic catalogue “Ecology and the Present”, the material is arranged according to urgent themes. The material is reprinted from newspapers.
The central library helps village libraries to organize their work methodologically as the centres of ecological culture. In their work they use thematic collections compiled by the Republican Youth Library: “The Library and Ecology”, “The Village Library to Young People”, “Experience, Innovations, Experiment”, “Education for Sustainable Development”, “The Republic of Buryatia Youth Library Is a Cultural and Information Ecological Centre for Young People”, materials of the “Eco-Project” competition.
The librarians of the Central district library, the children’s library, the Gegetui village library took part in the Baikal international information and culture forum. The Gegetui branch took part in the republican competition held by the Republic of Buryatia Ministry of Culture “Culture of the Village” and won the grant “Informtion Centre of Agricultural Tourism “Mende””. Now the library works over making its own database “The Village Chronicles”, “The Sacred and Cult places”, “Sartuul, the Gegetui Datsan”. A week end route is worked out called “Along the Trails of Our Ancestors, the Sartuls”, a booklet is published called “Gegetui Is a Generous Land”, a toponymic dictionary “Gegetui Is an Ancient Land”, the presentation “The Information Agrotourism Centre, “Mende””, for the library anniversary “The Gegetui Village Library”.
Within the framework of the International Baikal information and culture forum the Central library took part in the creative programmes competition and projects of young librarians of the Republic of Buryatia “Ecoproject”. Special prize “For the Young Soul” was given to the methodologist of the Central district library V.M. Filippova. The material is published in the collection “The Creative Programmes and Projects Competition” of young librarians of the Republic of Buryatia “Ecoproject”.
The Central library cooperates with other organizations, the Dzhida forestry, hunting reserve, the Young Technicians’ House, mass media, village administrations. Ecology teachers also take part in the work.
All the libraries try to find the individual approach to different categories of users. The most popular ones are complex forms of work on ecological education: ecology weeks, ecology days, ecological information days, as well as new forms of work, the shock lesson, roleplays, ecological trails, the open tribune, business game and others.
Since 2002 the “Ecos” club has been working in the Central library (headed by V.M. Filippova, the Central library methodologist) in cooperation with School # 1 (the ecology teacher is N.I. Polomoshnova). There are 2 guidelines in their work, nature protection and the environment and health. Such forms of work as ecology projects, essays, reports and discussing ecological publications in mass media are used. The club members organized the ecology action “My Word to Protect the Nature” devoted to the 70th anniversary of the Dzhida district.
There was a preparation period:
- appeal to the village and district population in the “Dzhidinskaya pravda” newspaper
- project work (School # 1)
- the work with other schools’ students
- looking for sponsors for the ecological activity
- taking pictures
During the action there were competitions: of ecological projects “My Village Is My Pride”, of ecological posters “My Word to Protect the Nature”, the book exhibition “The Land Which Is the Most Beautiful”, mini-discussions and ecological quiz of three tours. All the participants got encouraging prizes.
The final activity was the thematic round table “Ecological Panorama of Petropavlovka Village: Problems and the Ways to Solve Them”. The objectives of the round table were as follows: consolidation of all the social institutions in solving the problem of the village ecological and sanitary situation.
Representatives of the district administration, village administration, environmental health station, veterinary clinic, forestry, communal service, militia department, students of schools # 1 and 2, gymnasia, professional school # 29 and mass media took part in the round table.
The round table presenter N.I. Polomoshnova told the round table participants about our club and about the work which has been done. The students presented their works. During the discussion the ways out were worked out.
Game forms are widely used in the club work. These activities are of informative and educational character:
- “I Want to Make Friends with Nature”, an exhibition lesson
- “Where Are the Traces of Autumn”, a quiz exhibition
- “Birds Day”, ecological festival
Together with the Young Technicians House an ecological fairy-tale “The Forest” was staged and performed.
In the reading room of the Central library the club participants organized the intellectual competition “The Temple of Nature” (2 teams and their fans): selection tour, the home assignment “ A Pause for Advertising”, the competition “Fantasy Project”, ecological training, book exhibition “A Window into Nature” – all these lead the students to thinking over ecological problems and being sympathetic with man and nature.
We took the game programme with the action “For Healthy Lifestyle” to the children camp “Cheremushki”. The training “To Keep the Body and the Soul Young” was organized.
In the Zheltura village library there is the “Bagulnik” ecological club which works according to a special programme.
1. Zoological and ecological hockey was organized.
Puck # 1 was Express information and Dzhida ecological bulletin.
Puck # 2 was a journey over the Red Book pages.
The searching competition “The Barguzin Reserve” was organized – “The Protected Field of Wonders”. One book exhibition “The Barguzin Reserve”.
The drawings exhibitions “Village Sketches” and “Making Wonders” were organized to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Dzhida district.
A nature corner, with a birch tree and a stuffed bird against the background of medicinal herbs and flowers common for our neighbourhood, was designed in the library hall to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Great Victory. There is also a book exhibition there.
There were also room plants exhibitions named “The Ecologists of Our Soul”. One of the compositions, “The Memorial Wreath”, made of colourful geraniums, was arranged to pay tribute to the 60th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War.
A number of activities about the Republic of Buryatia Red Book was organized in the Nizhni Torey library to educate children and to give them information about the medicinal herbs and animals which are in the republican Red Book.
For advanced ecological education of different groups of readers the Central library system libraries organized:
- “Let’s Make a Herbarium”, a herbarium exhibition
- “The Healing Springs of Arshan”, ecological class
- “Let’s Join Hands, Friends”, an oral magazine (Altsak)
- “The Flowers Ball”, an ecological festival (Nizhni Torey)
- “Along the Forest Paths of the Native Land with a Basket”, a quiz game
- “So Wonderful Is the Corner Where I Live”, a stand (Yenkhor)
In the Shartykei library there is an ecological hobby group “Zharki” (a Siberian flower) where the young readers get the basic knowledge of ecology. They have games outside, such as discussions, excursions, questions and answers.
In the children library there is an ecological section for children where the librarians are active in using the methodological materials of the State Youth Library. An exhibition complex “Enter the World of Nature” is designed.
In the year under study an excursion was organized around the protected places of the district with the participation of disabled children and their parents while working over the grant “The Hope Refuge”. In the process of individual conversations the library forms interest in nature and in its protection problems. Such games as “Clever Boys and Girls”, brain-rings or erudites’ ecological fights are very popular with young readers.
To better understand the information needs of the users the central library had a poll “Library and Ecology” with a group of young people. The questionnaire database will help to define the library ecological education work efficiency (see Appendix).
Analysing the ecological education of our readers the librarians make a conclusion that it is an important sphere of work, it is in demand, the amount of work goes up yearly.
New forms of work have been introduced, but there are many difficulties, too. It is under-financing, of course which leads to poor stock renovation and ecological periodicals subscription. This year the links with social organizations are closer. The library workers publish articles on the activities in the local newspaper “Dzhidinskaya Pravda”.
Last year the priority guidelines of the work with young people were moral education of young people and organizing their healthy lifestyle.
Libraries as the most available culture institutions can help young people and support them in cooperation with local administrations, schools or houses of creative activity. The central library coordinates its work with young people with the teenagers’ affairs commission, the Republic of Buryatia Youth State Committee or the Dzhida district administration. The libraries respond quickly to the situation in the republic and use or invent interesting forms and methods: business games or roleplays, revelation hours, competitions, such as quizzes, trainings, hotlines, dramatized festivals, actions, tests or surveys.
The central library works in accordance with the programme “I Choose Life”. Every year the reading hall of the Central library popularizes literature against drugs addiction, AIDS or bad habits.
We designed the book exhibitions “Future Without AIDS” and “Beer Alcoholism” and had a video film watched. Together with School # 1 “PREVENT” volunteers the we organized training games “To Keep the Body and the Soul Young”, “Say ‘No’ to Drugs”, revelation hours “What Do You Think about Violence”, “Why It Is Difficult to Say about It”, a test poll “Smoking and Health”, the roleplay “How to Turn Down an Offered Cigarette”. Together with the district education board, teenagers’ affairs committee, militia and public prosecutor office there was an anti-drugs action “We Should Know the Problem to Understand, to Protect and to Help a Child”, the round table talk “Parents’ Lesson”.
The Zheltura library is active in promoting healthy lifestyle according to the programme “Say ‘No’ to Drugs”. Lessons of morality were given, “What You Should Know on Drugs and Drug Addiction”, stands, book exhibitions were designed, the training “Self-Respect and Drugs” was organized.
Many libraries worked to realize the programme “Young Racket”. School psychologists and militia officers cooperated in that work, too. During parents’ meetings the students gave out booklets “How to Protect Children from Racket”, took part in the parents’ meetings.
The central library helps village libraries to realize the programmes. For that the Republican AIDS Prevention Centre specialists organized a training seminar in the Central library (March 1-4) for teachers, librarians and Home Affairs officers to prevent drugs addiction and violence among teenagers.
Another urgent problem was discussed by the participants of the round table which took place in December in the reading room of the central library under the name “Developing Stress Ressistance in Children in the Condition of Unfavourable Social Environment”.
